It's that time of year again. While there have been no documented cases of lice at our school yet, of which I'm aware, other schools in the district have seen their first rush of these unwelcome visitors. As you know, lice can strike anyone at anytime, but there are things you can do to help minimize your child's risk of bringing these pesky pests home. Click here for a printable version of our schools coloring pamphlet to help you and your child learn how to outsmart these bugs. In the meantime, the number one thing you can do is to make it a habit to check your child's head on a regular basis. The sooner treatment is begun, the better for all involved. Those with longer hair should consider wearing their hair up in braids and ponytails. Boys might consider keeping their hair on the shorter side at least until the lice season ends. I will be awarding bonus bucks on a daily basis to girls who wear their long hair up or to any child who keeps their hair short. Some research suggests that lice hate the smell of lavendar. For the last few years I have kept lavendar oil in my classroom for students and teachers to use SPARINGLY on their hair. Tea tree oil is also rumored to be effective. You might want to consider switching to lavendar or tea trea scented shampoos and conditioners. In the end, though, frequent head inspections are the best weapon against these infestations. Do check your child's head regularly. Start tonight.
