October 17-21

"One rainy Sunday when I was in the third grade, I picked up a book to look at the pictures and discovered that even though I did not want to, I was reading. I have been a reader ever since." ~Beverly Clearly

Birthday Boy and Girl

After a smoky Saturday, it was quite a blessing to wake up Sunday morning to cleaner skies. The windows were thrown open and after church, my mom and I packed up our cat and headed out for one of our favorite leisurely drives culminating in stop at European bakery for one of her most cherished tarts. How are you spending these summer-like fall days?

Just a reminder: This week is conference week. Students will have early dismissal Mon-Wednesday. Some of you are scheduled for November 2. As you think ahead about the conference, please come ready to share your child's strengths as well as areas you hope to see your child grow. What do you want me to know about your child? Let's work together to set goals for your child.

An email was sent on Friday regarding our upcoming Harvest Party set for Friday, October 28th from 12:30-2:00. Please check your email for further details. Costumes welcome but not required.

Here's what we're learning this week:

LITERACY:

  • continuing to focus on identifying present tense verbs as action or linking words in sentences.
  • creative writing focusing on the component parts of a narrative i.e. characters, setting, problem, solution, main events.
How you can help at home. As you watch television shows or movies, ask your child, "Who do you think were the main characters in this story. Why? What problem did the main character face? How did he or she solve that problem?"

MATH:
  • continuing to focus on writing multiplication equations that match word situations.
  • using math vocabulary in our math discussions, specifically factor, product, greater, less than etc.
How you can help at home: writing matching equations is challenging for students yet as adults we do this all the time. Include your child in these thought processes as you encounter them in your time together. For example at the grocery store, "We need two apples, two bananas, and two melons. How many pieces of fruit is that altogether?"

SCIENCE:
  • What is the effect of water on natural materials?
