Agenda for September 26-30

“The future is something which everyone reaches at the rate of sixty minutes an hour, whatever he does, whoever he is.”
~ CS Lewis

 Meet the VIP

My name is Daniela. When I grow up, I want to be a gymnastics teachers. My favorite subject is Art because I like to draw. When I spend time with my family, we play Uno. I like to play games after school. I love to write. I like to sing at home. I have a pet dog.

Walking to Disney- First stop Great Wolf Lodge
We walked a combined total of 382 laps around the field which is a little over half the distance to Great Wolf Lodge. We used vertical bar graphs track our progress. We used multiplication, division, addition and subtraction to do our calculations. We are excited to add (see what I did there?) more laps to our accomplishment.

LITERACY-
  • Structures of story
  • Main subject and main verbs
  • Spelling list (Look for words to come home on Monday night)
How you can help at home: As your child completes 20 minutes of reading ask questions related to story structure. "Who was the main character? What problem did the main character face? How was that problem solved? You can also talk about your own reading in similar ways. "I read a story in an online news article. It was mostly about how this character solved this problem in this place." Use vocabulary such as character, problem, solution, setting etc. Also, encourage your child to practice spelling words. Your child can practice with an adult, a sibling, or even a pet kitty with unusually good listening skills :-)
MATH-
  •  Horizontal and vertical bar graphs
  • Counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s
How you can help at home: Continue skip counting with your child. This only takes a moment or two but lays the groundwork for future success in multiplication.

SCIENCE-
  • Water on a slope

SOCIAL STUDIES-
  • Natural resources in different regions of the USA
3RD GRADE HOMEWORK
  • We expect third grade students to read for at least 20 minutes a night (reading includes being read to or reading together).
  • Starting September 26, spelling words will be sent home Monday (at the latest Tuesday) and should be practiced at home in addition to what we do at school. They’re attached to the student’s pretest.
    • Spelling lists are differentiated based on scores on the spelling pretest given on Monday. There are 14 words on the pretest, and the pretest words are the same as List B.
      • A score of 13 or 14 correct gives students spelling list C for the week
      • 7-12 words correct is list B for the week
      • Fewer than 7 words correct is list A for the week

o   The words on List B (pretest words) come from our Journeys Reading curriculum and are considered third grade level.

  • Eventually we will begin learning cursive and it would be great to practice that at home too.
  • There is no nightly math homework, however, the “cool down” from the end of each lesson will come home so you can see what we’re doing in math. It will have a pen check mark on it, which means an adult in the room checked it. Please note that sometimes we don’t get all the way through a math lesson in a single day and no “cool down” will come home on those days.
  • Please reach out if you have questions about homework.

FYI - COVID Guidance for 2022-23 School Year

On August 5, 2022, the Washington State Department of Health (WA DOH) released an updated version of the Requirements and Guidance to Mitigate COVID-19 Transmission in K-12 Schools and Child Care. BSD will continue to follow the guidance from WA DOH as it comes out, with any requirements followed as requirements and any recommendations followed as recommendations. This COVID-19 guidance is important for school staff and administrators making critical decisions around COVID-19. The district’s respective COVID-19 webpages will be updated to reflect any changes throughout the year.

Reporting COVID-19 Cases and Outbreaks

The updated guidance from WA DOH requires notification to staff, students and their families when there are cases and outbreaks in schools. The Bellevue School District maintains an online dashboard for this purpose. This means at this time letters will not be sent to families regarding COVID-19 cases at school. COVID-19 cases for the 2022-23 school year are located on the COVID-19 Cases in Schools Dashboard, with data updated daily at 7:00 a.m.
