September 19-23

Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new. ~Albert Einstein

Here is what we will be learning this week. As much as possible, I will try to include tips for how you can support your child at home.

READING
  • Answering comprehension questions in the form of a complete sentence.
  • Using examples from the text to support our conclusions
How you can help at home: Ask questions about the materials your child reads. Ask, "What happened in the text to make you think that?" Encourage your child to read for a minimum of 20 minutes daily.

WRITING:
  • Using complete sentences
  • Identifying the subject and the predicate of a sentence
  • Identifying the main verb
MATH:
  • Analyzing data from pictographs and bar graphs
  • Counting by 5s and 10s on scaled pictographs
How you can help at home: Multiplication and division compromise much of the third grade math curriculum. Now is the time to start memorizing the basic tables up to 12 X 12. Start with the 5s and 10s. Encourage your child to count by 5s and 10s. Quiz them randomly. "What is 5 X 3?" When your child has managed these, move on to 2s and 4s.

SOCIAL STUDIES: Geography
  • Regions of the USA.
  • Landmarks of the PNW
  • Climate and natural resources of PNW
An email went home detailing our Walking Challenge. We set a goal of walking the West Coast from Bellevue to Disneyland and stopping along the way to learn about different geographical areas. Our first stop is Great Wolf Lodge! Keep checking here for updates.

SCIENCE: Weather and Climate
  • How does water interact with different surfaces?
How you can help at home: As your child gets ready for the day, discuss the forecast. What is the expected high temperature for the day? Will it rain? How should we dress for the weather?

Congratulations to Hannah, last week's VIP. Hannah demonstrated the leadership abilities required for this important position by being among the top three DOJO point earners. She earned DOJO points by showing respect, solving problems, and making good choices. Congratulations, Hannah! You did an awesome job!
