Looking Ahead This Week

The first week of school is over and I can already tell that this is going to be a great year. What a wonderful band of curious scholars have graced Room 204. Students have already mastered so many of the routines and procedures that make our class run like clockwork. We are more than ready to conquer the academics. Here's what we'll be learning this week.

MATH- We review addition and subtraction with and without regrouping. We will be focusing on:

  • Making and interpreting place value drawings
  • Using place value to identify the value of a digit
  • Using place value to group and "ungroup" multi-digit numbers to solve word problems
  • Identifying numbers from scrambled place value names
SCIENCE-We begin our first unit of the year, Water and Climate. This week, we investigation water, exploring the observable properties of water. We will be exploring answers to the following Focus Questions.
  • What happens when water falls on different surfaces?
  • How does water move on a slope?
  • How much water can a dry sponge soak up?
  • What is the effect of rain on natural materials?
READING-We will be working on identifying the main idea and supporting details with a focus on differentiating between the two. Students will be applying this concept to both fiction and non fiction texts.

WRITING- We will be developing our expository writing skills in order to factually describe the phenomena observed in Investigation 1 of our Water and Climate unit. Students will be using evidence from their investigations as well as evidence from their text to support claims made in response to Focus Questions.

We have a busy and exciting week of learning ahead of us :-)
Please plan on coming to our Curriculum Night on September 12th. Details to follow.
