Week ending September 29

Here's what happened last week:

LITERACY: Reading Groups have started! Students are beginning to meet in small, guided reading groups with peers who share similar goals.  We read leveled texts while practicing learning behaviors such as sharing our, "noticings" and explaining why we thought our, "noticing" was important in helping us comprehend the text. We searched for story elements i.e. characters, setting, and plot. We applied our noticings to help us better understand these elements of story structure.

We had our first weekly spelling test. Students were assigned a list of words based on their performance on Monday's pretest.

We continued identifying the subject and the predicate in complete sentences.
Students worked in small groups to compose sentences before color coding the subjects and predicates.

How you can help at home: We will be practicing our spelling words during the week at school, but take a few minutes during the week to quiz your child on his or her words. Spell them together. Also, keep encouraging your child to read for a minimum of 20 minutes a night.

MATH:  We practiced our nines, threes, and fours this week. We also practiced the fives shortcut. A homework helper tutorial was posted to the blog last week to familiarize parents with the shortcut. Students continued to apply their growing knowledge of basic multiplication basic facts to solving word problems.

How you can help at home: If you haven't already done so, get some multiplication flash cards for your child. Take a few minutes to go over the cards a few times a week. Also, check your child's folder every night for homework. While students are given time to complete homework in class, they are encouraged to bring it home and bring it back again the following morning. This is to help them develop responsibility in later grades when homework needs to be completed at home and returned.
Students continue to work on using math terms to explain their mathematical thinking

SOCIAL STUDIES: Students worked on memorizing the locations of more than half of the states in our nation. They continue to work on identifying the four hemispheres of the earth. This can be challenging for third graders. It's tough to visualize.

How you can help at home:  Talk about places you have visited as a family whether they are cities, states, provinces, countries, or even places on different continents. Discuss where those places are in relation to Bellevue i.e. north, south, west, or east. How long did it take to travel there? Did you walk, drive, or fly? Have you been to a different continent? Ask where it is in location to the equator or the prime meridian. Is it in the northwest hemisphere, or the southeast hemisphere. Do you have friends or family members that live far away? Locate their homes on map and discuss where they are in relation to Bellevue.

MISC: This week is spirit week which will be capped off on Friday with our school wide walk-a-thon. Students can participate in spirit week by dressing up as follows:

Monday: Monochromatic Monday (one color only)
Tuesday: Team Spirit-where clothing of your favorite sports team.
Wednesday: Wacky Wednesday- the wackier the outfit, the better.
Thursday: Crazy Hat and Hair Day
Friday: Eastgate Spirit- where your Eastgate gear or just plain blue and white. Don't forget your athletic shoes. We are walking laps. Students are trying to walk more laps than me. Game on!
