LITERACY- We read The Trial of Cardigan of Jones by Tim Egan. We focused our noticings and wonderings on details that helped us make logical inferences and predictions about the story. We continued to work on written responses to comprehension questions making sure that our sentences have both subjects and predicates.
Spelling patterns- Long Vowel/ Consonant/ silent "e" words. This week we'll be working on vowel digraphs making the long A and long E sounds. Click here for this week's words. Students will be given a pretest of List B words on Mondays. Those scoring 100% on List B words will be given challenge list C words. Those scoring fewer than 7 correct will be given modified List A words.
Cursive- lowercase i
How you can help at home: We make inferences all the time. The next time you're watching a television show or a movie together ask, "What do you think will happen next?" Follow that up with, "What happened in the show/movie that makes you think that?" Tying inferences and predictions to key details in the narrative is an essential part of mastering this skill.
MATH- We started timed tests this week to help us with our basic facts recall. Students have 3 minutes to solve 60 basic facts. This week students worked on 10s. When your child earns 100% twice on the tens (s)he will move on to the fives. Once every student has mastered the 10s, we will color in a section of a giant ice cream sundae. Once every child has mastered the fives, we will color in a different section of the sundae and so on. Once every child has mastered all their basic facts up to 12X12=144 then the entire sundae will be colored and we will celebrate with a party.
We also continued working on applying basic facts to the word problems. Students selected from a multiple of strategies to help them solve the problems.
How you can help at home: Continue to work with your child on memorizing multiplication facts. Consider purchasing or making flashcards. Encourage your child to practice with the cards.
SOCIAL STUDIES- We continue to work on identifying the 50 states. We completed the states in the South East.
MISC- We had our first virtue assembly of the year. Three classmates were recognized for demonstrating respect. Third graders were given the opportunity to introduce next month's virtue cooperation. Click here to see the third grade video we showed at the assembly.
On Friday, we participated in the Eastgate annual walk-a-thon. Students worked up a sweat and walked an impressive amount of laps.
