Week Ending Oct 20

What a perfect fall weekend it's been. Just enough blustery rain to make staying indoors feel cozy, and just enough sun breaks to make a run possible. I hope you had a chance to enjoy the spectacular foliage. Is it just me, or are this year's leaves really going the extra mile to put on a great show for us?

It's been another busy week of learning in our room. Fortunately, the bright minds that grace our classroom thrive on being challenged. Here's a glimpse into what we learned last week.

LITERACY- We read a work of historical fiction entitled Pop's Bridge written by Eve Bunting. We used Venn diagrams to compare and contrast the main characters.

We continued to work on being reflective readers by making intentional observations, recording our wonderings, and composing questions to focus our thinking. We record these notes in our reading journals.

We also begin practicing dictionary skills. We practiced alphabetizing words, and using guide words to locate words. #26 shared her Chinese dictionary with the class.

SPELLING:  We focused on long /o/ words. Students worked on a variety of vowel digraphs including the word family -old. This week we will focus on long /i/ words. Click here for a hard copy of this week's words. Your child will take a pretest on Monday and should know what list (s)he is on by Tuesday.

MATH: We finished unit one and took our first unit test. Students with the average score around 93%. As a rough guide, elementary percentages should be interpreted slightly differently than percentages in later grades. Generally, 90% indicates a strong, third grade understanding of the concepts. 93% and above indicates an excellent, third grade understanding. Between 80%-90% indicates the student is on their way to mastering the concepts. A few minor concepts may still need tweaking.

Unit 2 continues our focus on multiplication and division as opposite operations. We begin the unit with our 6 count-bys. As always, continue practicing the basic facts at home.

MISC: Room 204 brought home the trophy for most laps walked in the walk-a-thon. Students won an in-class movie lunch as their reward, along with personal packs of Skittles. These boys walked as many OR MORE laps than their very competitive teacher.
