Week Ending Nov 3

The Week in Review

What a surprise our snow has been this weekend! Last weekend, I went on a lovely 8 mile run  with short shirt sleeves and capri running pants. The weather was so delightfully warm that I drove to my running trail with the top down on my car and ended my run with a frozen yogurt eaten outside. What a change a few days make. I'm enjoying the snow, though. Hopefully, you all got a chance to enjoy the white stuff before it melts away.

Halloween 2017
A big thank you to all the wonderful parents in Room 204. You took time out of your schedules to make this year's party a huge success. A special thank you goes to Mrs. F and Mrs. M for organizing the event. The students had a wonderful time and I so enjoyed meeting you all again.

LITERACY- We finished our three paragraph monster stories last week. For this creative writing project, students were given the topic sentences to the paragraphs as an organizational guide. We focused on using "Show Me," language rather than "Tell Me" language in our writing. We identified the purpose and audience for our stories and used this information to help us select an appropriate writing voice.

In our guided reading groups, we are continuing to use our noticing, wonderings, and questions to help us answer comprehension questions in complete sentences.

Common Core State Standards

MATH- We are working on solving two step story problems with multiple operations. Students learned the order of operations using the familiar old stand-by, Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally. (Parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction.)

Common Core State Standards

SCIENCE- We started our new unit, "Water and Climate." In our first few Investigations, students explored how different materials react to water drops. They learned that materials can either repel or absorb water drops. Students also designed an experiment to discover how many grams of water a dry sponge can absorb. They are learning to describe their Investigations and to explain their findings in scientific journals using a scholarly voice which is different than the friendly voice they use for creative writing.

Students, for one DOJO point, did you got outside in the snow this weekend? What did you do? Did you build a snowman? Leave a comment using your #.
