Week in Review

It's been another week of heavy duty learning in Room 204.  Here's the scoop:
Reading Comprehension- We focused on analyzing characters by using a three column graphic organizer.  Students identified descriptive details in the text pertaining to a specific character.  They connected those details to experiences in their own lives and used those connections to guide their thoughts about the character.

Writing- Students wrote personal narratives about a time in their lives when they helped a fellow human being.  Their writing focused on use of vivid word choice and selecting an appropriate voice.

Math- Students continued practicing regrouping using money amounts.

Science- Students discovered the need for a standard unit for measuring mass and learned that in the metric system this unit is the gram.  They also discovered the need for a standard unit for measuring capacity or volume and learned that in the metric system this unit is the liter.

Chess- This week students discovered that the game of chess requires the use of very specific courtesies.  They learned the significance of shaking hands before and after a game.  They practiced playing in near silence with no kibitzing from onlookers.

Two student volunteers demonstrate the courtesies of chess while playing the pawn game.
October Book Project- Also, be sure to check out your child's blue Eagle folder.  You'll find step by step instructions for this months book project.  There is a link to the same instructions on the sidebar of this blog under Math and other homework. You'll find an additional link to a sample poster.

Extras Be sure to ask your child about today's walkathon experience. We did the math after the event and students in Room 204 walked a combined total of 474 laps averaging just under 17 laps per student.  The number of laps ranged from 11 to 21 with five students running one more lap than my 19 laps and two students running 21 laps.  That means I lost a bet with 7 students and will be paying up in the form of skittles come Monday morning.

Also, be sure to check out the new 3rd grade parent group website hosted by our head room mother.  You'll find lots of information including calendars, volunteer forms, and social events related to the parent side of the classroom. http://msrotzs3rdgradeparentgroup.shutterfly.com/ This link can also be found in the helpful links sidebar of this blog.
