November 7-10

"If a year were tucked inside a clock then autumn would be the magic hour." ~ Victoria Erickson

MATH:
  • Unit One test, an opportunity to see just how much progress we've made and to identify what areas still need focus.
  • Describe area as the number of unit squares that cover a plane figure without gaps and overlaps.
  • Measure the area of rectangles by counting unit squares
How you can help at home: Continue to encourage your child to memorize their basic multiplication facts. As multiplication problems become more challenging, it is becoming more helpful for students to have these basic facts at the ready.
LITERACY

  • Using the acronyms PIE and TAP to analyze a writing prompt. PIE relates to the purpose for the writing. Third graders write for one of three purposes; to Persuade with an opinion, to Inform with facts, or to Entertain with a story. TAP relates to the specific instructions for the writing project. T stands for task and relates to the form the writing will take e.g. a personal letter, a paragraph, a brochure, or an essay. A stands for audience and helps students decide on an appropriate writing voice. For example, when the audience is determined to be a friend, students might choose to write with an informal, personal voice. In contrast, if the audience is the principal, students might choose to write with a more formal, scholarly voice. P takes students back to the Purpose (PIE) and reminds students to write with that in mind.
How you can help at home: Learning to analyze writing prompts has historically been quite challenging for third graders. Apply the PIE, TAP acronyms to a recent piece of writing you've done and share your thinking with your child. I had to write an email (task) to a customer (audience-professional voice) to persuade him (purpose) to buy a product.

SCIENCE:

  • the relationship between water temperature and density
SEL
