April 22, 2022

Hello Families,

I do hope everyone is out enjoying this beautiful spring weekend weather. What a difference compared to last weekend.

Aprilletje zoet, heeft nog wel eens een witte hoed-
The sweetness of April sometimes wears a hood of white.

We've been very busy learning in Room 204.

MATH: We started our newest unit, fractions! In this unit, students develop an understanding of fractions as numbers and of fraction equivalence by representing fractions on diagrams, numbers lines and generating equivalent fractions, and comparing fractions. This week we focused or the following.

  • Partitioning rectangles into equal parts
  • Explored fractions as numbers that describe parts of a whole
  • Described unit fractions as fractions with a 1 in the numerator because it describes one part of the whole
  • Explored non-unit fractions
  • Added non-unit fractions with like denominators

LITERACY: We started our Young Authors Day (YAD) stories. This week we focused on the following prewriting strategies.

  • Used a graphic organizer to plot the problem faced the main character, two failed steps and one successful step the main character will employ to resolve the problem, culminating in a solution.
  • Used a character web to map out a description of the main character. Focused on adjectives that describe character traits that will be important to the plot of the story.
  • Drafted an introductory incident that where the relevant traits of the main character are shown not just told. For example, "The kitten jumped all over the furniture, " instead of, "The kitten was energetic."
Spelling-Words with suffixes

SCIENCE:We started our newest unit, Structures of Life in which students explore the diversity of plants and animals we observe in our world. Students explore how organisms exhibit a variety of strategies for life, have a variety of observable structures and behaviors, have varied but predictable life cycles, and reproduce their own kind by passing on inherited characteristics to offspring. This week we focused on the following
  • Conducted a seed hunt by opening fresh fruit and locating the seeds.
  • Described and compared seed properties.
  • Discovered seeds may vary in their form, but are alike in their function.
