Happy Spring, Everyone! Here's a snapshot into all the learning that has been happening in Room 204.
WRITING- These past few weeks, students have been growing increasingly independent in their ability to respond to a text-based prompt. This week, they have been working on drafting a response combining highlighted, text-based evidence with their annotated sidenotes explaining the significance of the evidence. This is a potentially challenging job. We have been using triple stuffed OREO (OREREREO) acronym as a guide to drafting opinions. READING- We started Sasquatch book clubs. Currently, two groups are meeting. The Honest Truth group is focused on writing chapter summaries that support the main idea with examples from the text. Clementine is practicing the stop and summarize strategy as a tool to build comprehension. They are also rereading passages multiple times to build accuracy and fluency.
MATH-Students are multiplying teen numbers and multiples of tens by breaking down bigger numbers into smaller, friendlier numbers. Students are finding the area of gridded and non-gridded rectangles. They are decomposing larger rectangles and adding the areas of the smaller resulting rectangles in order to find the area of the larger rectangle.

SOCIAL STUDIES- We are reading about the Great Wave of Immigration that took place in the mid 1800s to the early 1900s. Students are exploring the different reasons why immigrants immigrated to the USA.
MISC- Starting Monday, second and third graders will no longer be segregated according to class at recess. Second and third graders will be going to recess in "the big kid field," and are free to play with students from other classes. We had our first combined recess on Friday afternoon. Seeing kids play together after two years was an incredible sight to behold.
