MATH- written by Avyan, Antonio, and Cooper.
This unit was mostly about addition and subtraction. We practiced three different algorithms for addition; Show All Totals, Expanded Form and Proof Drawings otherwise known as Base Ten Blocks. We learned two alternative algorithms for subtraction; expanded form and proof drawings. These new algorithms show how and why the standard algorithms works. We also learned how to round to the nearest ten and hundred. We ended the unit with two step problems. We will be ready for the SBA.
SCIENCE-
We experimented with the spinning or rotating motion of a top. We analyzed the effect of friction on a moving top and used the data to determine the best design for a top. Click here to see videos of your child conducting experiments. If asked for a join code, it is 39dd13fa.
READING-
We have been reading and learning about George Washington Carver and Frederick Douglas. Working as a group, we carefully read each text to determine the main idea. We searched the text for supporting details, which we highlighted.
BOOK REVIEW-by Ephrata
We are reading Narnia:
The Magician's Nephew by: C. S. Lewis, which is a really good book. One
reason you should read this is because it has lots of fantasy, but not too
much. In the beginning of the book, a witch was wakened from a deep sleep after
someone struck a bell, and that shows that this book has lots of magic and
fantasy. Another reason to read this book is that it has a lot of humor. For
example, Uncle Andrew dressed up in his finest because he fell for Queen
Jadis's beauty. Finally, the best and last thing this book has to offer is
"Good vs Evil. One time evil occurs is when Queen Jadis talks about how
her father had a feast with seven hundred people, but her father killed them
before they could finish because they were thinking bad thoughts. However, the good
is always stronger. To illustrate, young Digory risked his own life to save his
friend. Remember this book is a great book and that you should definitely read
it. I've already told you why.
We wrote explanatory paragraphs summarizing the main idea of two articles. We used text evidence to support the main idea. We added our own sentences explaining why or how are evidence is relevant. We used topic and closing sentences.

MISC-
Valentines Day party on the 14th. Students are invited to bring Valentines to school. I encourage families to save time by limiting writing to just, "From, Name." It makes passing out Valentines so much easier. We have 18 students in our class. We have activities planned to celebrate. Students will decorate bags in class to bring home Valentines.
