What We're Learning

 Here's what we've been learning!

MATH-  We shifted our focus to double and triple digit addition and subtraction with regrouping. In order to deepen our conceptual understanding of the standard algorithms (that's borrowing and carrying for you 80s kids) we first explored alternative algorithms. To introduce regrouping we looked at proof drawings. You can click on the links below to see a really quick tutorials of proof drawings for addition and subtraction with regrouping. Remember, the purpose for using proof drawings to introduce regrouping is to give students a concrete visual of how and why the standard methods work.

SCIENCE -Matter and Motion
  • Experimented with balanced forces including magnetism to make paperclips float in midair
  • Explored wheel-and-axle systems and paths of motion
  • Used cups rolling down a ramp to uncover how systems curve in the direction of the smallest wheel
  • Discovered the impact of changing design variables in twirly birds

LITERACY
  • Spelling -or and -ar words
  • Grammar- identifying nouns, adjectives, and verbs in text
  • Reading-main idea and supporting detail in Scientist and Inventors: George Washington Carver
  • Writing-5-7 sentence expository paragraph using evidence from the text to elaborate on the main idea of a text

MISC- We participated in our first digital escape room. This room had a Narnia theme and students solved puzzles related to characters, setting, plot, and main events.
