Week ending January 5

Happy New Year! Welcome back. The new year brought a new friend to our classroom. Although he's only been here for four days so far, it feels like #20 has been a part of our class since September. Welcome, #20!

Here's what we've been learning this week.

MATH- We've been learning how to tell time on an analog clock. This includes calculating elapsed time. We are also learning to analyze data using pictographs, vertical bar graphs, and horizontal bar graphs.

Common Core State Standard

How you can help at home: Encourage your child to tell time on an analog clock. Have your child estimate starting and finishing times for daily tasks. For example, "This movie starts at 5:30 and runs for 2 hours and 30 minutes. What time will it be when the movie ends?"

LITERACY:  We read Kamishibai Man by Allen Say. We used a graphic organizer to arrange our ideas for a persuasive written response to the article. We searched the text for three examples from the text to support our opinions.

Common Core State Standard

We also learned to distinguish between abstract and concrete nouns. In cursive, we practiced lowercase s, j, and p.

SCIENCE- We are getting ready to begin our second unit in science, "Motion and Matter." In our first Investigation, we'll be defining forces as a push or a pull that causes a change in motion. We'll be looking at two forces, gravity and magnetism and learning how to balance forces to make a paperclip float!

Next Generation Science Standards

Have a great weekend! I am heading off to Battleground, WA to run a 10K with my sister. A rainy run seems like a nice beginning to 2018.

Students, for one DOJO point, what is one resolution or goal you have made for 2018. I'll start. I want to run a total of 1000 miles this year.
