WRITING: We began work on our first five paragraph essay. In this essay we will be analyzing a character from a read aloud using examples from the text to support our reasoning. We created a character web using adjectives to describe Miss Trunchbull from Roald Dahl's Matilda. After brainstorming a number of adjectives, we selected three that had the possibility of the most text support. We then jotted down key words from the text onto the web to organize our thoughts. We then began working on our rough drafts, saving the first introductory paragraph until the very end of the process. We started our rough drafts with the second paragraph, the first in the body of the paper.
grammar: We differentiated between action verbs and linking "being" verbs.
suffixes: -or and -er
How you can help: Mystery Book Projects-Wanted Posters- are due this Friday. Encourage your child to begin working on his or her poster. Remember, the posters should reflect a month's worth of thought and effort. Here is a finished example brought to you by #4. Way to go, #4!
MATH: We took our unit three test on solving multi-digit comparison problems using math mountains and comparison bars to determine whether a partner or a total was missing. We started our newest math unit on multiplication and division.
How you can help: Begin working on those multiplication tables at home. Memorization is key. Use flash cards, websites etc. If any of you have found a smart phone app that works well for memorizing multiplication tables, please post it in the comment section below.
SCIENCE: We continued learning about the metric system by discovering the need for a standard unit of measurement for volume and capacity i.e. the liter and the millliliter. We used one liter beakers, and 100ml beakers filled with water to help us determine the volume of drinking cup.
How you can help: We are going to continue practicing measuring the volume and capacity of a variety of objects. We will be adding plastic syringes and graduated cylinders to our tools. Please consider sending one small container with your child tomorrow for this project. We talked in class about using small jars, tupperware containers, thermos jars, drinking bottles etc.
MISC: Our class Halloween party is scheduled for Halloween from 2:50-3:30. Students are welcome to bring costumes. District policy forbids toy weapons. Students will have time to change into their costumes during afternoon recess leading up to the party.
Scholastic orders due by Wednesday, October 30. Thank you for purchases. They help our class earn books. I will be sending in the order after school on Wednesday.
