Second graders enjoyed an exciting time of learning this afternoon as they took part in the Insect Safari. The presentation started off with an informal time of sharing as student volunteers reviewed what they had learned in their fall science units before the presenter introduced them to the idea of categorization. Students learned how scientists divide and then subdivide again and again all living things into smaller and smaller groups. They learned how insects are just one group in the much larger group of bugs that include arachnids, isopods, and crustaceans. Students were then let loose to peruse the massive and impressive collection of preserved bugs before they gathered again on the floor to observe several large and impressive live species from various locations around the world. Be sure to ask your child to tell you about his or her favorite part of the Safari. Click below to catch a brief slideshow of Insect Safari photos.
PS Homework Helpers, due to the Insect Safari, students did not have time to write in their parent journals so no homework letters for you this week. Be warned though, your weekly writing assignments resume next week:-)
