Hello, and welcome to our class blog! Here is where you'll find all the information you need for the duration of your third grade year.

It's been a busy first few weeks of school. Here's what we've been learning this week.

READING- Prolific readers engage with the text by asking questions and making observations. This week we used the following sentence starters to help us keep track of our thoughts, "I noticed...," and "I wondered...." Encourage your child to read for a minimum of 20 minutes every night.

Common Core State Standards (CCSS)

WRITING- Engaging writers use complete sentences when responding to questions. We focused on using parts of the question in our response to ensure that our sentences have both a subject and a predicate. We are continuing to work on checking our writing for proper use of conventions such as capital letters and ending punctuation.

MATH- Brilliant mathematicians have a solid understanding of our base 10 number system. We practiced representing a digit's value using place value drawings. We also began rounding numbers to the nearest ten and to the nearest hundred. You can help your child master this skill by thinking aloud whenever you find yourself using this skill. For example when at the grocery store, "These eggs cost $2.59. If I round that to the nearest dollar...."

SCIENCE- Inquisitive scientists investigate naturally occurring phenomena around them. We have been investigation the properties of water in preparation for studying its role in determining weather and climate. We investigated how water reacts when it is dropped on different surfaces. We also observed how water moves downhill on a slope.
