Week Ending March 2

READING: We read Judy Moody Saves the Word  by Megan McDonald, illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds. We used key details in the text to help us make inferences about the main character. We paid special attention to structure of the story in order to help us identify important characters, setting, and plot.

WRITING: We continued  our work with writing well-organized paragraphs in response to a reading prompt. We highlighted text evidence that responded to the main question within the prompt and wrote notes in the margins detailing why the highlighted evidence was important. We determined which three pieces of text evidence and reasoning were the strongest and used this to inform our opinion. Together we collaborated on composing a paragraph that contained a strong topic sentence that clearly stated our opinion, three pieces of text arranged in a logical way using linking words, reasons why we the text evidence was important, and a concluding sentence that restated the idea of the topic sentence using slightly different wording. I was very pleased with the outcome of the collaborative effort. The next goal is for students to follow this process within their small groups relying on their peers to guide their efforts.

MATH:  We used the expanded form method to help us understand how and why the standard algortihm for regrouping with subtraction works. We learned how to prove our accuracy by using proof drawings. We identified similarities in regrouping for addition and subtraction and learned how to use the opposite operation to check our work.

SCIENCE: We continued our work with forces and motion by constructing and observing the motion of standard twirly birds. Click here to see a few twirly birds falling in style. Then we changed single variables within the design of the twirly bird and tested them against the standard system. We recorded and analyzed our data in order to evaluate which twirly bird systems were optimal.
