Weeks in Review

Halloween 2016

Thank you to all of our wonderful parent volunteers who made this year's party a great success. We had games and crafts and loads of fun!

In other news, our school reached its Walk-a-thon goals and as a reward, several students were selected at random to SLIME our principal and vice-principal at our school assembly. #25 in our class was one of the lucky chosen. Here's a video clip of the deed.

IMPORTANT NEWS FLASH: Third grade teachers will be participating in a professional development training for four days, November 3,4,7 ,and 8. That means we will have a guest teacher starting tomorrow. Students have been prepared and know that the fun thing about having a guest teacher is that you get to do things a little differently than the norm.

CONFERENCES: I am truly enjoying getting to know so many of you through our fall conferences. I enjoy talking about your children strengths and working with you to figure out how to help them achieve goals for improvement. I am available to meet Mondays Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 3:00 to 3:25, or 3:30-3:55. This  week and next week are already booked. If you conference hasn't been scheduled yet, please email me with a preferred day and time starting the week after next.

READING: We read narrative nonfiction including Bat Loves the Night by Nicole Davies. We focused on sequencing events as a comprehension skill.

SPELLING- We focused on words with short and long vowels sounds. We observed a pattern. When vowels are left alone in a word, they are often short. However, in order to make a vowel long, something must be done. We learned that when two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking We also worked with adding the suffixes-able, and -ible to root words to change the meaning.

GRAMMAR-We learned to identify action verbs and being verbs.

SCIENCE- We applied what we learned about how balanced and unbalanced forces affect an object's path of motion to help us design wheel and axle systems. We changed variables within the designs to help us observe patterns in the different paths of motion.

Mr. L guides a small group of scientists as they build wheel and axle systems.

MATH-We started unit two with an emphasis on multiplying and dividing 6s, 7s, and 8s. We are learning to choose appropriate math tools to help us solve problems with accuracy.
