The Week in Review

9/19-9/23
The Sid Shuffle
Thank you to all of you who were able to make it to curriculum night on Tuesday. It was lovely seeing you all again, and meeting some of you for the first time.Your children enjoyed reading your letters. Here's what we've been learning this past week.

MATH- We have been exploring how multiplication and division are related. We have been observing how these opposite operations undo each other. As we look for patterns, we've seen how memorizing our multiplication tables helps memorize our division tables as well.

How you can help at home- Continue working with your children with flashcards. Immediate recall of basic facts is becoming more and more important as we progress through increasing difficult concepts. Also, check your child's folder for math homework. As we mentioned on Curriculum Night, students are given time in class to work on homework, but must finish any incomplete work at home. Students are instructed to bring home completed homework as well so that parents can keep abreast of what we are learning in math. Remember to return homework to the class for correction and credit.

WRITING-We learned how to use a revising strategy called, "The Sentence Stretcher." This strategy sets up students to write several versions of an original sentence, each version more complex the previous. After all versions of the sentence have been constructed, students choose the version that flows best with the piece they are writing.

READING-We spent a lot of time this week, practicing the learning behaviors for reading rotations. Students are learning what meaningful engagement looks and sounds like so they can continually work on building reading skills whether in a small, guided group, or working on Typing Master. We also continued our work with writing summaries as one way to respond to a text.

Common Core State Standard R.L.3.2

How you can help at home- Encourage your children to read for a minimum of 20 minutes every night. Ask them open-ended questions about what they've read.

MISC-Picture day is on the 27th. Bring your smiles!

#3 - I'm going to watch the movie Matilda and see how the end is and I'm not going to spoil it for everybody. I hope it's fun! I love doing the Sid Shuffle all the time at home too. I taught my brother and mom.
