The Week in Review 9/6-9/9

We've been busy in Room 204 this week.  We've spent time building classroom community, practicing routines, and continuing to learn about our classroom and Eastgate rules. Read on to find out about our academics this week.
Reading with Mr. R.

READING- We have been discussing the importance of selecting a "Just-Right" book for independent reading. We are working on building up our reading stamina and sticking with a book for a minimum of 20 minutes. In the year ahead, we'll do a lot of reading work in small, guided groups designed to meet our individual needs with the knowledge that the most influential factor in reading growth is time spent reading.
Students use Accountable Talk at the Helping Table to help each other  with writing.

How you can help at home- Encourage your child to read at home for a minimum of 20 minutes a day, every day.

MATH- We are beginning our math instruction with multiplication. We are looking for patterns in fives. We are learning that one way we can think of multiplication is as repeated addition.

How you can help at home- Consider buying a set of multiplication flash cards for your child to begin memorizing multiplication facts.

Working on our fives
Showing our thinking

MISC- We worked in teams to develop our classroom rules and procedures. Together, we made posters to indicate how we can demonstrate safety, responsibility, respectfulness, and kindness in the classroom, cafeteria, hallways, and on the playground, so that we might always pursue academic excellence.

STUDENTS- We've been practicing multiplying by 5s an 3s. Leave a comment telling me what comes in groups of fives, and what comes in groups of three.
