LITERACY: We read Aero and Officer Mike an informational text by Joan Plummer Russell. We practiced summarizing the most important details of the text to help us determine the author's purpose. In this case, we determined that the author purpose was to report on the training dogs go through to become part of the police force.
In writing, we focused on pronoun/verb agreement.
MATH: We continued practicing making comparisons using multiples and fractions. For example, there were 10 times as many Seahawk shirts seen in the hallways today as compared to normal days so on normal days there are only 1/10 times as many Seahawk shirts seen in the hallways as there were today. This continues to be a tricky concept for third graders made more difficult for those who have yet to memorize all the multiplication tables.
How you can help at home: Please spend a few minutes over the long weekend listening to your child recite their times tables paying particular attention to 6s, 7s, and 8s.
Speaking of the Seahawks, we used are daily "brain break" aka running minutes to cheer for our Hawks. Take a moment and enjoy our Hawk spirit!
SCIENCE: We made the acquaintance of one, Mr. Bones, and through painstaking poster observations and calculations, determined that the Mr. Bones (and the rest of us, for that matter) have 206 bones in our bodies. We talked about the three functions of the human skeleton; mobility, support, and protection.
