Today in Science, we worked in groups while we experimented with measuring mass. First, we built scales that had a balancing beam and a base. Then we counted how many paperclips it took to balance a washer, a wooden square and a chip. Different groups had different sized paperclips so our answers varied. We needed a standard unit of measurement. We tried again. We used grams. We counted how many grams we needed to balance the same items. This time our answers didn't vary as much. We learned that in Science the standard unit for measuring mass is the gram.
