Week Ending March 31

IMPORTANT ACTION ITEMS  Our spring music concert is set to take place on Tuesday, April 4th at 7PM. Students are singing songs from around the world. I have forwarded an email from our talented Mrs. Q with details about the concert including information about her blog where you can find the lyrics to the songs as well as links to YouTube videos so students can practice the songs. We've been practicing the songs in class as well. Many of the songs are  sung in the original language. This can prove quite challenging for the performers. Please encourage your child to practice the lyrics at home. Students, leave a comment telling me you have practiced singing your songs and earn one DOJO point.

Also, please check your child's Blue Eagle folder for the purple-colored Student Placement Profile. Students are encouraged to return their sheets as early as possible, preferably by Monday. The parent input provided on these forms helps the Eastgate staff thoughtfully create balanced classrooms that meet the needs of your children. Students, return your forms on Monday for a DOJO point.

Highlights from our 100 Star Party including some pretty impressive
gymnastics feats.

We played Qwirkle, Clue, Dutch Blitz, and Guess Who?

READING- We read Sarah, Plain and Tall and searched for supporting details in the story to help us identify a main idea. In small groups, students wrote opinion pieces in response to prompts based on their small group stories. Students used text evidence to support their reasoning and claims.

WRITING- We continued composing our the first drafts of our Young Authors Day stories.  We learned how the rules for writing dialogue in our stories. Students chose one section of their stories to begin practicing their dialogue writing skills. Currently, they are working on composing an opening paragraph that introduces the main characters and the setting in an interesting way.

How you can help at home: Your child's draft will be coming home on Friday along with instructions, guidelines, and expectations. In order to help your  child have as clean a draft as possible, encourage your child to talk about his or her story at home. Ask your child where they are in the writing process. Have your child retell as much of their story as possible.

MATH-  We practiced solving two step story problems involving multiple operations. Students learned to identify the first step before solving the problem. Some students found it helpful to draw a quick picture to help them visualize the problem and the steps needed to solve it.
