For the week ending May

What an exciting week. It all culminated with our annual Young Authors Day celebration. A great big thank you to all of you who supported the event either by revising and editing your child's story at home, and/or volunteering at the event.  We started the morning off sharing our books in small, multi-grade circles.

Next, we headed to the library where our guest author, Suzanne Williams, inspired us with stories about how she embraces the writing process. We finished the morning in the gym where we local high school teams entertained us with their dramatic recreations of our stories. A special thank you to Eastgate mom, Sarah Newsum who volunteered so much time and energy in putting this together.

READING- We've begun a new literacy unit based on Harry Potter. We've been identifying patterns in children's literature written by Brittish authors. Specifically, we're looking at the child heroes who overcome their circumstances by virtue of intelligence and integrity. We've also been identifying character stereotypes.

MATH- We're continuing our Harry Potter theme into math. Specifically, we are learning how to compare fractions with different numerators and denominators. This is a new concept for most students, and to keep it interesting, we incorporated Troll Boogers into the lesson. (Ask your student :-) )

  • SCIENCE- We finished our mock rock Investigation and our applying the geological skills we learned in our new Investigation studying minerals. We made detailed observations of four mystery minerals. We are using properties such as color to help us identify the different minerals.
This week begins the Smarter Balance state standardized testing. Please help your child do his or her best by getting them to bed early each night, and feeding them a low-sugar, protein rich breakfast in the morning.
