The Weeks in Review

MATH TEST TOMORROW: Students are bringing home their practice tests from today to study for tomorrow. I have the same test linked in the homework section in case you would like an extra copy. The math homework tonight is just to study for the test tomorrow.

READING: comprehension skill-We looked for the main idea in a non-fiction article about Andy Payne, the winnder of the first transcontinental race in 1928. After finding the main idea, we looked for specific details related to and supporting of the main idea.
Main Idea and Supporting Details

How you can help at home: As your child reads fiction and non-fiction at home, ask
him or her to finish the following sentence stem in around ten words. "The passage I read today was mostly about......" Then have your child add two or three details that tell more about that main idea.  This is important because identifying the main idea helps the reader better understand the most important information in the text. It helps us focus on what author's message.

MATH:  We started adding and subtracting unlike fractions, fractions with different denominators. We also started division with remainders. These are new concepts for most third graders and somewhat difficult to understand.

How you can help at home: Because these concepts are so new, practice is imperative. Now more than ever, the daily math homework is important. Please encourage your children to continue to be diligent with homework. Check out the homework tutorials to see how we're solving these problems in class. Be prepared to give help, if needed. Here are links to two tutorials for each of these.
