WRITING: We are using Ralph Fletcher's How to Write Your Own Life Story as a guide to help us write an engaging personal memoir. After experimenting with several different brainstorming methods to help us pick a personal memory with the potential to be quite engaging, we are using a story map to help us identify the key components of our story i.e. characters, setting, and plot.
We practiced with contractions, and compound words. We also learned about past tense verbs and making verbs.
READING: We read the non-fiction text, Life on the Ice by Susan E. Goodman paying particular attention to the main idea and supporting details. To find the main idea, we completed the following sentence stem: this passage was mostly about.......... We pulled "tell me more about that" statements right out of the text, restating them in our own words if necessary. We used a graphic organizer to outline our thoughts.
SOCIAL STUDIES: We began studying the history of immigration. We learned why people sometimes immigrate and we integrated our reading comprehension skill to help us find the main idea and supporting details in the story of a real-life immigrant. We discussed how a people group's foods,
SCIENCE: We are wrapping up our study of the human body with an investigation of stimulus/response.
MATH: We reviewed rounding numbers to the nearest ten and hundred. We are also learning to use the data found on tables to make horizontal and vertical bar graphs. We are learing new math terms such as mode, scale, and range.
MISC: Mr. B came in this week to help with our class room's auction project. The project promises to be beautiful. Photos of the finished project to come.
