The Week in Review

WRITING: We practiced a fun technique for overcoming writer's block, doodling. We used this new method to help us draft a Halloween story. First, we doodled our way through a guided drawing lesson of a young Frankenstein. Then we let the pictures act as an inspiration for short, creative stories.

Wanted Posters for our October Book Projects were due on Friday. Due to the holiday on Thursday, I extended the deadline until Monday. If your child hasn't yet turned in a Wanted Poster, please encourage him or her to do so soon. November Book Projects will be going home this week.

Multi-cultural mini-posters went home last week. Students are encouraged to decorate the person in a costume reflecting their heritage. They can use fabric, crayons, paint, or even patterned paper. The only limit is their imagination. These mini-posters will be displayed around the school for multi-cultural week.

#2 has already turned in her multi-cultural poster
MATH: We are working on memorizing our multiplication tables. Students are taking part of the Sundae Challenge. As students commit the various tables to memory, they get to color in appropriate sections of a picture of a Sundae. As soon as every child has completely colored his or her sundae, i.e. memorized all the tables up to twelve, we will celebrate with a Sundae party. You can help by encouraging your child to practice the tables every night.

SCIENCE: We applied what we've learned about measuring volume and capacity to make a prediction about whether or not the 355ml printed on the label of most pop cans refers to the volume or the capacity of the cans. Students designed experiments to test whether their hypothesis was correct or incorrect. Be sure to ask your child what (s)he discovered.
