The Week in Review/

READING- We've been using our thoughtful analysis of characters to help us make inferences and predictions in narratives. To do that, we used specific details from the text about characters from our current book, The Horse and His Boy by C.S. Lewis. We used those details to help us discuss the character and the character's traits in a thoughtful and intentional way. We found we were then able to make logical inferences and even some pretty insightful predictions about how the character's storyline might evolve. This had led to rather impressive classroom discussions.

WRITING- We began the process of writing our own personal narratives. We are starting this process by first identifying the traits of an intriguing personal narrative. We generated a personal bank of ideas, special moments in time. Then we began narrowing down the selection process.

MATH- We took our Unit Six ssessment on patterns last week. This was a mini-unit consisting of only 3 lessons that revisted the idea of finding patterns in numbers. Ask your child how (s)he did. This week we began our unit on multiplying and dividing. W e explored the commuatative property of mulitplication, and learned about factors, products, dividends, divisors, and quotients.  This is a major unit and I strongly encourage everyone to help their children practice their time tables at home. There is no math homework due on Tuesday. We didn't complete today's lesson. Just continue to practice multiplication facts for fives and twos.

SOCIAL STUDIES- Last week we took our assessment that focused mainly on map and globe reading skills. The test required students to name a minimum of two states in each of the five regions of the U.S. I am proud to announce that most students were able to name far more than the required two, or even the bonus three states. Indeed the boys and girls challenged themselves to learn all fifty states, and most came quite close with a few even succeeding in doing so. Several also added a bonus challenge of learning the state's capitals as well!

SCIENCE- We began our winter unit on the human body. Students learned about the skeletal system in this exquisite machine. They are learning the three jobs of the skeletal system as well as the different types of joints where bones meet. They assembled their own Mr. Bones skeleton.

OTHER: Instructions for our next book project went home today. Please be sure to check your child's backpack for them. A pdf copy will be in the sidebar.
