READING- We finished reading The Phantom of the Opera by Kate McMullan. This retelling of the old classic is a scholastic version that is kid-appropriate (but scary enough to keep them hooked) and yet includes most of the main plot points of Gaston Leroux's orignal story. We continued our work with character analysis by examining how the title character is simultaneously the bad guy, and yet an empathetic personality at the same time. We discussed how the writer was able to create such an empathetic bad guy. We even listened to snippets of the famous Andrew Lloyd Webber musical. So, if your child is humming, "Music of the Night," you'll know why.
SPELLING/CURSIVE- We worked with the -oy and -oi dipthong and looked for a pattern to help us create a rule about when to use each. Students discovered that-oy is used at the end of a syllable as in loy* al, or roy* al, while -oi is used in the middle of a syllable as in spoil and toil.
MATH- We worked on mathematical expressions usings lesser than <, greater than >, and =. Students learned to solve expressions on opposite sides of the sign to determine which sign to use.
TOYMAKER- Finally, third graders are looking forward to welcoming Rick Hartman aka The Toymaker next Wednesday the 21st. Flyers went home earlier this week. For those of you still unfamiliar with the Toymaker, Mr. Hartmen is a former teacher who has successfully combined his love of learning with his love for toys to create this workshop. Third graders will get an opportunity to apply all that they learned in this fall's Science unit on measurement to help them build their own toys. Thanks to a generous contribution from our PTA, we've been able to bring costs down to $7.50 per student. Thank you to those of you who have already sent in money for your child and to those of you who have generously thrown in a few extra dollars to provide scholarships for those students who need them. Another thank you goes to parents who have volunteered to help students during this presentation. Remember, you don't need carpentry skills to be a volunteer for this. Let me know if you're available.
