The Week in Review

READING- Using humorous fiction, we practiced sequencing events as a means to deepen understanding of a text.

WRITING- We practiced writing well-organized responses to questions about our reading using examples from the text to support our thinking.  We discussed trying to use action verbs in place of being verbs when possible in order to add interest to our pieces.

MATH- We began our big story problem unit. We focused on identifying the different types of story problems in order to determine the most efficient strategy for solving.  We practiced using math mountains or comparison bar graphs in order to determine if the unknown quantity was a partner or a total.

SOCIAL STUDIES- We partnered with our third grade teammates for our first bully prevention lesson.  Students read a story with the purpose of identifying examples of respect.  Students then worked in small groups to create ways of showing respect in various given situations.

We also used what we knew about the physical geography, the natural resources and the climate of Bellevue to create travel brochures for our beautiful city.

CHESS- We learned the history of the bishop.  We learned how the bishop moves and captures.  We played Monster Bishop where we were challenged to capture 11 of white's pieces in 11 moves.

NOVEMBER BOOK PROJECT- Students are encouraged to have at least selected an appropriate biography or autobiography  for our November book project by no later than Wednesday.  The sooner the better.  Details for the project are listed below.
